- LETTERS, Page 6A DAY IN THE LIFE OF CHINA
-
- Your pages of photographs and text are a genuine tour de
- force because they both criticize a regime and arouse deep
- sympathy and admiration for the Chinese people (SPECIAL SECTION,
- Oct. 2).

- To special correspondent Michael Kramer, nothing in China
- is positive. The country is "mostly drab and dusty"; the people
- he meets are busy ratting on others. Children "seem sullen"
- and "stare straight ahead." He makes Chinese culture and customs
- sound bad to readers who have no true idea of them.

-
- I spent ten months near Guilin in China during World War
- II. I believe no other place on earth has China's majesty,
- particularly the mountains and limestone formations found in the
- southeastern part of the country.

- Albert T. Willis Jr. New Bern, N.C.
-
- Your report presented a clear image of life in the shadow
- of the People's Republic. Today's China cannot be viewed as a
- society that has its roots planted in the traditional Chinese
- culture. Beijing's rulers should be aware that the Communist
- ideology they have imposed on their people is from the West,
- even though they blame the tragedy of Tiananmen Square on
- Western influence.
-
- Ting Cheng Mahopac, N.Y.
-
- Rudyard Kipling said, "Oh, East is East, and West is West,
- and never the twain shall meet." After seeing the picture of
- the Chinese man holding up a puppy he is considering for his
- dinner, I think Kipling was right.
-
- William L. Mason Irondale, Mo.
-
- We Westerners shouldn't be too outraged by dog eating, as
- our own meat-centered diet demands the slaughter of millions of
- animals every year. While it may be impossible to change the
- eating habits of the Chinese, it's relatively easy to modify our
- own. Give it some thought.

-
- Disgusting to us but not to them. Rest assured, though,
- that my own dog got an extra hug and table treat.
